The Boys & Girls Club of Lansing began in 1964 as the Boys Club of Lansing. Local businessmen established an activity center targeting underprivileged street youth. Affiliation with the Boys & Girls Club of America brought national program ideas, professional staff, and a philosophy of working with youth.
For more than 40 years the focus of this community agency has remained on youth from disadvantaged circumstances, who lack appropriate resources and role models for success in school and/or employment. The mission has broadened from recreation and socialization to include education in a broad range of life skill areas.
Who We Are
1964
BEGINNINGS
In 1964, the Boys & Girls Club was formed and its first home was on Center Street what is now Old Town Lansing.
1988
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
A $1,300,000 Capital Campaign built the current facility in the south-side of the city on Pleasant Grove Rd. The location was chosen because of it’s high density of youth and need for additional recreational and family support services.
1990
New FACILITY
The building and program began operating for 800 youth. Since the opening of the present facility in June 1990, over 25,000 youth have been served. Over 3,000 volunteers have contributed almost 40,000 hours of expertise and over 60 community organizations have undertaken program collaboration.
2016
JACKSON TEEN ZONE
A $1,000,000 Capital Campaign, led by a lead gift from Jackson National Life Insurance Company of $650,000, allowed the Boys & Girls Club to expand its current location by building the Jackson Teen Zone, a dedicated space for our teen programming.
